An electronic sensor forms a grid for detecting area features of a nearby positioned object, such as a fingerprint. The grid includes a plurality of parallel driver lines connectable to a driver source and a plurality of parallel pick-up lines oriented substantially perpendicular to the driver lines and overlapping the driver lines. The driver lines are separated from the capture lines by an insulating dielectric layer. The overlaps at which the driver lines and pick lines intersect define impedance-sensitive electrode pairs that act as pixels at which area features of the object positioned in the vicinity are detected. One or more conductive probes extend from one or more associated impedance-sensitive electrode pairs through a pad of insulating material to the sensor surface.
