Methods, systems and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for natural language processing. One of the methods involves receiving a search query from a user during a user session; receiving a plurality of previous searches by the user received during the user session; generating a plurality of rewrites of candidate queries, wherein the rewrites of candidate queries are derived from the search query and the plurality of previous search queries by the user; evaluating each rewrite of candidate queries, wherein evaluating each rewrite of candidate queries is based on an analysis of the search results corresponding to the rewriting of candidate queries; selecting a rewrite of candidate queries with a score that meets a threshold; and providing search queries that correspond to the rewriting of candidate queries.
