An imaging system and method are disclosed. An MR image and a measured B0 field map of a target volume in an object are reconstructed, the MR image containing one or more light and / or dark regions. One or more distinguishable inventory materials are identified that correspond to the bright areas. Each dark area is iteratively identified as one or more ambiguous inventory materials. Susceptibility values corresponding to each distinguishable and iteratively identified ambiguous inventory material are assigned. Based on the assigned susceptibility values, a simulated B0 field map is iteratively generated. A similarity metric between the measured and simulated B0 field maps is determined. In the dark areas, inventory materials are identified based on the similarity metric to determine associated susceptibility values. The MR imaging data is corrected based on the assigned and determined susceptibility values. Based on the corrected MR imaging data, a diagnostic assessment of the target volume is provided.
