Leather hydrophobization process and leather produced therewith

The invention relates to a leather hydrophobization process, comprising the steps of: providing tanned, at least partially dried leather having a water content of from 0 to 25% by weight, treating the leather with a mixture of compressed gas and a water repellent at a pressure of at least 30 bar in a pressure vessel, and - depressurizing the pressure vessel to ambient pressure. By applying the method according to the invention, it is possible to obtain surface-hydrophobized leather, but also thick and firm, deep-hydrophobized leather, as used for example for shoe soles.
