ALGORITHMS FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS WHEN SWITCHING DOWN AND LEFT TO CROSSROADS

A system and method for warning a driver of a host vehicle of possible collision with other vehicles when turning at an intersection. The method involves determining if the host vehicle is likely to turn at the intersection, if so, dividing the intersection into many different areas, each of which has a different degree of accident risk. The method detects the speed, speed and position of the host vehicle and all relevant vehicles in the intersection area. The method determines a predicted route for the host vehicle and the other vehicles. The method then determines, based on the predicted routes, whether the host vehicle will be at the same time as the other vehicles in a collision zone of the intersection; if so, a warning is issued to the driver or automatic emergency procedures are taken to avoid the risk of collision or to diminish.
