The invention relates to a cardiac function system and to a method for supporting cardiac function. In particular, the invention relates to a cardiac function system (10) in which a bypass section (11) has at least two redundant blood flow paths, wherein in each blood flow path at least one axial position at least one flap unit is arranged, which is arranged to counteract a return flow the desired flow direction to prevent, wherein the cardiac function system is adapted to generate an absolute target blood volume flow through a by means of technical fluid (F) induced volume pulsation individually on the respective blood flow path. By means of the artificial heart device according to the invention, adverse effects such as spallation or microbubble formation can be avoided. Furthermore, anticoagulants can be dispensed with or their use can be reduced. In particular, an intra-aortic balloon pump can be replaced by pulsating membrane pads. Preferably, the artificial heart device of the invention has redundant components, e.g. at least two membrane pads or chamber tube sections. In particular, two motors or pumps in conjunction with two membrane pads around two blood chambers generate volume pulsations in the blood chambers, preferably using liquid-filled membrane pads.
