A system and method for controlling the radio access technology, by means of a vehicle telematics unit includes receiving a request for triggering a voice call of a vehicle occupant to the vehicle telematics unit; the end of an existing data link having a latest technology - council, in order to communicate a mobile radio mast, with simultaneous speech - and data connections (svd) with the use of the latest technology - council are not possible; the termination of the data connection with the mobile radio mast, with the use of a latest technology - rats, setting the voice call via a mobile radio mast use of an older technology - rats; detection of the end of the voice call; instruction of the vehicle telematics unit, the use of the older technology council, as a response to the end; and arranging the data communications with a mobile radio mast by the latest technology - council.
