The present invention aims at the location of a fault on an electrical network tree comprising a source substation in a root node and the sections of the branches. It is used for this purpose, the steps: - obtain at least one electrical signal at the time of the fault, this electrical signal comprising at least a transient change related to the fault, - express the electrical signal comprising the transient change in the complex plane, - for each section, using a transfer function associated with at least to the segment in order to estimate, in the complex plane and as a function of the complex expression of the electrical signal, the terms of a loop equation assuming the defect in this section, - identify the section to which satisfies the equation of the loop, to a tolerance threshold, the law of kirchhoff, in the real part (re) and imaginary part (im), the fault being located in this section.
