A starter (1) is provided with a starter drive assembly comprising a pinion body (47) translationally mobile with respect to the drive shaft and a pinion is mounted translationally on said pinion body (47) so that the pinion has translational mobility with respect to the drive shaft between a rest position and an engaged position. The starter contactor comprises a contactor having a contact plate (33) that can move between a deactivated position in which the contact plate (33) is distant from the contact terminals (35a, 35b) and an activated position in which the contact plate (33) is in contact with the two contact terminals (35a, 35b) so as to supply power to an electric motor (7). The contactor further comprises a second core (75) which is translationally mobile in said protective casing (21, 39) and interferes with the movement of the contact plate (33) between the activated and deactivated positions, and a second excitation assembly (73) that can retain the second mobile core (75) so that the latter can block the movement of the contact plate from the deactivated position towards the activated position.
