A method of winding a strip (24) of rubber on a form of revolution (46) in which a strip (24) of predetermined length is formed, front and rear edge markings being affixed thereon, leads to the shape (46), arranges the leading edge on the shape (46), and drives the shape (46) to wind the band (24) onto the shape (46). In a first step, the drives of the band (24) and the form (46) are synchronized so as not to change the length of the band. In a second step, these drives are driven according to the angular position of the shape (46) at the end of the first step and the position of the trailing edge mark to relatively vary the travel speeds of the the leading edge mark and front edge mark and compensating for the length variations of the band (24).
