The system makes it possible to grind or polish hard surfaces, preferably windows, by successive grinding passes, in an easy manner for the operator, especially at the beginning and at the end of the pass. The grinding device is slidably mounted on two vertical bars (12) and (13) by a sliding housing (21), on which is slidably mounted a motor support member (22) carrying a motor (23) driving a grinding disk (26). Return springs (27) are interposed between the motor support member (22) and the sliding housing (21) to move the grinding disk (26) away from the surface to be grinded when the operator releases the pressure on the grinding device. Application to all hard surfaces, including panes and large surfaces of vertical glasses.
