A circulating water pump system comprises a condenser 1 that condenses steam by exchanging heat with cooling water supplied by a circulating pump 3 from a cooling water source 11. A flowmeter 6 in a water delivery channel 4 measures the flow rate of cooling water. A control device 8 controls the number of revolutions of a device 7 driving the pump 3 so that the amount of cooling water delivered to the condenser 1 is determined according a measurement made by the flowmeter 6. The control device 8 may comprise a revolution number calculation unit (9, Fig. 2) to calculate the number of revolutions of driving device 7 required to supply a target amount of cooling water to the condenser 1. A control signal generating unit (10, Fig. 2) may generate a control signal for controlling the driving device 7, and the number of revolutions may be determined by a water level at the source 11. The system is particularly suitable for condensing steam generated in a nuclear power plant. A method of controlling the system is also claimed.
