A method and apparatus for generating a data profile for a medical scan

A data profile for a medical scan (100) is generated by obtaining (210) data point values for a plurality of data points representing spatial locations within the medical scan and determining data point classification parameters (225) defining data point value ranges for a plurality of classes. Each data point is assigned (235) to a class having a data point value range corresponding to the value for that data point. A data profile (e.g. an indication of the number of assigned data points) for the medical scan is then generated based on the assignment of the data points to classes (240). The generated data profile for the medical scan is finally output (255), e.g. to a store, printer or display. A (or multiple) region of interest may be determined (220) within the scan, and the assigning may be done to those data points within the RoI, with a data profile for the RoI on the assignment. The data profile may be generated based on a computed proportional contribution value (245) for each class, or on a comparison of the proportional contribution with a reference contribution parameter, e.g. reference range, reference proportional contribution value, or reference deviation value.
