The method involves generating a supercontinuum (3) from an optical pulse signal (2) emitted by an optical pulse source (14) e.g. titanium doped sapphire laser source, by decomposition of an electrical supercontinuum field along two simultaneous measurement and polarization directions of intensities of two electronic components to assure spectral coding of the signal. Supercontinuum polarization ellipticity induced by a terahertz interference (6) i.e. terahertz electric field in an optical medium (12) i.e. tellurium doped zinc crystal, is decoded. An independent claim is also included for a single-shot measurement device of a transitory birefringence induced in an optical medium, comprising a spectral coding unit.
