In a process for effecting reductive amination by reacting a carbonyl compound with a secondary amine and hydrogen, the reaction is carried out as a continuous operation and the reaction mixture comprising the carbonyl compound, the secondary amine and hydrogen is contacted first with an acidic fixed bed and then with a fixed bed of hydrogenation catalyst (hereinafter referred to as a hydrogenation fixed bed).
