The invention relates to a method for transmitting data packets in a communications system using a transmission link between a station (FH; MH), which transmits data packets, and a receiving station (MH; FH) and using, between the stations, a performance enhancing device and/or performance enhancing function (PEP) that serve(s) to enhance the performance of the transmission on at least one portion of the transmission link. According to the invention, the performance enhancing device (PEP) receives the data packets from the transmitting station (FH; MH) and transmits them to the receiving station (MH; FH). The performance enhancing device (PEP), while using header data, monitors a sure transmission of data packets on the performance enhanced portion of the transmission link and, optionally, initiates a renewed transmission of defective or lost data packets. In order to improve the overall transmission performance, the invention provides that, particularly when the system is subjected to high usage, a decision device (SP) routes, to the performance enhancing device (PEP), encrypted data packets that cannot be sufficiently identified for processing in the performance enhancing device (PEP).
