A trench opener/closer (20) is provided for an agricultural seeding machine (10) movable in a planting direction (11). The trench opener/closer (20) includes a disc opener assembly (22), a gauge wheel assembly (24), a closing assembly (26), a boot member (23), and a seed delivery member (25). The disc opener assembly (22) has a first axis of rotation (32). The gauge wheel assembly (24) has a second axis of rotation (48) disposed rearward of the first axis of rotation (32) in the planting direction (11). The closing assembly (26) has a third axis of rotation (54) disposed rearward of the second axis (48) of rotation in the planting direction (11). The boot member (23) extends between the disc opener assembly (22) and the closing assembly (26). The seed delivery member (25) is disposed rearward of the disc opener assembly (22) in the planting direction (11). The seed delivery member (25) is disposed adjacent to both a trailing edge (61) of the boot member (23) and the closing assembly (26). The trench opener/closer (20) is used on an agricultural seeding machine (10), applying a respective method (100) for planting.
