The stage (44) has switching branches (52A, 52B) including controllable electronic switches (54A, 56A) connected serially to each other by a midpoint (58A). A capacitor (60) is connected between positive and negative output terminals (38, 40). An electromagnetic coil (62A) is connected between one of the terminals of the capacitor and the midpoint of the branch. A control law is selected from two control laws such that a semiconductor element (84) i.e. insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), of the switches is always in a blocked state. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an electric converter (2) a device for converting alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC) (3) a terminal for recharging an electric battery.
