The present invention relates to a method for obtaining images of samples in optical microscopy which allows obtaining images with complete quantitative phase information or optical path difference of microscopic samples (M) by means of generating simultaneous phase gradient images. The light emerging from the sample, illuminated by a variety of plane waves, is split into four beams using optical or electro-optical means. The image of the sample with the four beams is simultaneously generated on an array sensor. The images are directly related to the gradient. A numerical integration algorithm obtains the phase from the gradient information. The present invention is particularly useful as a microscopy technique in biology and biomedicine.
