The invention relates to a method for the operation of an air dryer arranged between an air compressor and a compressed-air system, and to an air dryer (2) for performing said method. The air dryer (2) has a dryer cartridge (6) and a venting valve (8), which are connected to each other by means of an associated distributor housing (10). In a conveying mode, compressed air supplied by the compressor is conveyed into the compressed-air system via the dryer cartridge (6) while the venting valve (8) is closed. In a regeneration mode, regeneration air stored in the compressed-air system is conducted through the dryer cartridge (6) and vented to the environment via the opened venting valve (8). The internal channel system of the distributor housing (10) is designed in such a way that, in the conveying mode, the compressed air supplied by the compressor is conducted through a radially outer region (18) of the venting valve (8) in order to heat the venting valve (8), and from there is fed to the dryer cartridge (6).
