A battery charger (3) and a battery management system are proposed. As soon as the rechargeable battery (2) is connected to the battery charger (3), a controller (33) of the battery charger (3) applies one electric pulse or a sequence of electric pulses to a terminal (311) for a power line (5) for applying charging current to the rechargeable battery (2). A controller (14) of the rechargeable battery recognizes the electric pulse or the sequence of electric pulses that are received at a terminal (22) for the power line (5) of the rechargeable battery. The controller (14) of the rechargeable battery (2) in return broadcasts information on type, identity and actual battery status to the battery charger (2) via an interface (12) for wireless communication. The battery charger (3) receives this information using an interface (32) for wireless or wired communication and the controller (33) of the battery charger (3) uses this information to choose and apply an optimal charging protocol when charging the rechargeable battery (2) that is connected to the battery charger (3).
