To improve the accuracy of investigating damage by mitigating the work load and cost associated with damage investigation of steel structures.SOLUTION: A method for investigating damage or method for inspecting damage to steel structure includes a coating film forming step for forming a stress light emitting coating film by applying a stress luminescent coating material containing a stress luminescent material on a coating layer without removing the coating layer covering the surface of a steel base part which is a base part of the steel structure; an imaging step for producing an imaging image obtained by imaging a light emission generated by stretching a damaged opening of the steel base portion in which an opening/closing motion of the steel structure is applied to the steel structure by stretching the stress light emitting film; and a step of determining the existence or the degree of damage to the steel structure based on the captured image.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
