A grid structure of a nuclear fuel assembly including two regions, a protective region and a crushable region. The crushable region of the outer periphery of the grid structure is designed to be plastically deformed when subjected to a large impact load. On the other hand, the protection area inside the grid structure with the control rod guide thimble is only plastically deformed under such a load, and the location of all control rod guide thimbles is protected.
