A system and method for rate detection of a SOUNDWIRE extended (SOUNDWIRE-XL) cable is disclosed. In one aspect, software may be used to initiate a functional exchange between the host device and the slave device via the SOUNDWIRE-XL cable. In a second exemplary aspect, a resistor can be associated with the data line in the slave device. The designer can encode the rate information in the slave device by using different values of the elements. The host device can then sample the data lane and determine the rate of the slave device.
