A method of using ultrasound data to determine a surrogate respiratory signal for four-dimensional computer tomography includes obtaining computer tomography data by a computer tomography imaging system 402 and one or more respiratory cycles. Acquiring ultrasonic data with an ultrasonic probe of the ultrasonic imaging system 404 simultaneously with acquiring computer tomography data, wherein the ultrasonic probe is aligned to acquire an image of the diaphragm of the subject. A step of synchronizing the acquired computer tomography data and the acquired ultrasound data, and determining a substitute respiratory signal from the acquired ultrasound data.
