The techniques described herein include receiving, by one or more processing devices, a first plurality of values that represent a set of coefficients of an adaptive filter disposed within an active noise cancellation system. It can be embodied in a computer-implemented method. The method also includes accessing one or more estimates of the instantaneous phase value associated with the transfer function representing the effect of the secondary path of the active noise cancellation system, and one or more of the instantaneous phase values. Updating the first plurality of values based on the estimated values to generate an updated set of coefficients for the adaptive filter. The method further includes programming the adaptive filter with a set of coefficients updated to affect the operation of the adaptive filter.
