A gas exchanger is described having one or more limiting elements that optionally reduce gas exchange to avoid hypocapnia and excess oxygenation in small patients. The gas exchanger includes an outer wall and a core that defines an inner wall and includes a gas exchanger housing having a blood inlet and a blood outlet for receiving a blood supply. The gas exchanger also includes a hollow fiber bundle provided in the housing between the core and the outer wall, and a gas inlet chamber that receives an oxygen supply and directs the oxygen supply to the first end of the hollow fiber bundle.
