An exemplary embodiment of a method for detecting hydrocarbons in a system and method for detecting an analyte in an aqueous solution includes pretreating a water sample to provide a test sample. At least one output signal from at least one sensor is processed by a microcontroller using a model of sensor response and a bank of Kalman filters to estimate the concentration of at least one analyte in the aqueous solution.
