Plant-based dyes for staining biological samples, extraction methods and uses thereof

The present disclosure provides compositions comprising brazirain that can be used as dyes to enhance the visualization of nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA. A simple, time and cost effective method for the extraction of brazilein from bark starting material is also provided herein.
