The present invention relates to a process for the emulsion polymerization of an itaconic acid-containing ester functionality, for example an alkyl ester of itaconic acid known as an alkyl itaconate. More specifically, esters of polyitaconic acid polymers are made by emulsion polymerization and contain more than 50% by weight of itaconic acid esters with selected particle size and molecular weight and syndiotactic level.
