A system and method are disclosed for controlling a ship to determine if a ship is experiencing a drive off event, identify a subsystem that causes a drive off event, and correct the drive off event. The step of determining is performed using a processor of a dynamic positioning control system to determine whether there is any discrepancy between the modeled vessel motion and the measured ship motion, And processing the measured ship motion.
