The present invention relates to a power receiving device (PD) in a power over Ethernet (PoE) system. The present invention proposes that the PD selectively transmits a power request to a power supply equipment (PSE) based on the support of the PSE for autoclass. A PSE that supports autoclass will determine the maximum power that needs to be allocated to the PD based on a measurement of the power used by the PD that supports autoclass during classification. If the PSE does not support autoclass, the PSE will instead assign a default maximum power (based on the classification) to the PD. When the PD is operational, the PD determines whether autoclass is supported by the PSE. If autoclass is supported, power requests should not be sent. Otherwise, the PSE will allocate power based on this requirement rather than the more accurate measurement.
