Intensity modulated rotational radiation therapy (VMAT) with non-coplanar trajectories

The method includes determining a set of candidate beam directions. The radiation treatment method further includes selecting a subset of non-coplanar interest beam directions from the set of candidate beam directions based on fluence optimization using a beam angle selection algorithm. The radiation treatment method further includes determining a set of delivery options based on a beam trajectory algorithm, wherein the delivery options include at least non-coplanar trajectories during the radiation treatment delivery. The radiation therapy method further includes optimizing delivery options and generating a VMAT radiation plan having non-coplanar beam directions. Delivery option optimization includes optimization of at least one machine parameter.
