System and method for automatically identifying potentially important facts in a document

Disclosed is a system and method for identifying potentially important facts in an electronic statutory document obtained from an electronic document repository. The system includes a processing device and a storage medium in communication with the processing device. The storage medium retrieves the document and parses the characters in the document based on at least one of the title and paragraph characteristics associated with each paragraph in the document, and the paragraph is either a fact paragraph, a consideration paragraph, or a result paragraph. It includes program instructions that cause the processing unit to determine if it is present. The storage medium extracts each sentence in the fact paragraph and tells the trained sentence classifier whether the sentence is a potentially important fact sentence or a non-important fact sentence based on the characteristics of each sentence. Program instructions are further included that direct the decision to be made and cause the processing unit to identify potential important facts. [Selection] Figure 3
