PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable optical reader capable of maintaining the high accuracy of reading even when a margin area is set, and an optical reading method using the portable optical reader, and a computer program.SOLUTION: A character string to be read is image-captured, and the character string is recognized on the basis of the captured image. A border line is detected from the captured image, and determination is made as to whether the detected border line exists within an area of prescribed width that is provided at the front and/or the rear of the recognized character string. The width or shape of the area is adjusted on the basis of the determination result so as not to include the border line, and the adjusted area is set as a margin area. When the amount of a gradation change within the set margin area is less than or equal to a prescribed threshold, the recognized character string is outputted as the result of reading.
