The present invention relates to propellant compositions which include an energy binder such as nitrocellulose and a stabilized and encapsulated red phosphorus as a ballistic modifier. the propellant composition may further include an energy plasticizer such as nitroglycerin. for example, the propellant composition may be formed by mixing a dual base or multibase propellant including nitroglycerine plasticized nitrocellulose with the stabilized and encapsulated red phosphorus. propellant compositions may be substantially free of lead and may show improved ballistic properties. Methods for forming such propellant compositions and a war device including such propellant compositions are also disclosed.
