The present invention relates to the preparation of a rare earth permanent magnet by immersing a portion of a sintered magnetic body of a composition of r 1 -fe-b (where r 1 is a rare earth element) in an electrodeposition bath of a powder dispersed in a solvent, the powder comprising a rare earth element oxide, fluoride, oxyfluoride, hydride or alloy, electroplating to allow the powder to be deposited on a surface region and heat treating the powder coated magnetic body deposited at a temperature below the sintering temperature under vacuum or inert gas.
