processes for producing metal chromium or low nitrogen chromium alloys that prevent nitrogen in the surrounding atmosphere from being transported to the melt and being absorbed by the metal chromium or chromium alloy during the metallothermal reaction, including degassing under vacuum a termite mixture comprising metal compounds and metal reduction powders contained within a vacuum vessel ignite the termite mixture to effect reduction of the metal compounds within the vessel under reduced pressure, i.e. below 100.00 kpa (1 bar) and conduct the entire reduction reaction in said vessel under reduced pressure, including solidification and cooling, to produce a final product with a nitrogen content of less than 10 ppm. The obtained end products, in addition to the low nitrogen metallic chrome in combination with other elements, can be used as raw materials in the manufacture of superalloys, stainless steel and other special steels whose final nitrogen content is less than 10 ppm.
