Systems and methods are provided for determining a cure state of cement in an exploration well. A drilling device can be used to drill the cement in an exploration well. Contact between the drilling device and the cement may cause friction or heat, which may produce a gas. A gas detector may be positioned near a exploration well to detect an amount of gas and a type of gas produced by contact between the drilling device and cement in the exploration well. The cure state of the cement in the exploration well can be determined based on the amount of gas and the type of gas detected.
