The present invention relates to a device for monitoring an individual's eye which comprises: a transparent vehicle for contacting the individual's eye; and a photosensor facing the subject's eye to receive reflected light from the subject's eye and to determine a light intensity of the received light, the photosensor being disposed on the transparent vehicle; and that the photosensor includes one of: a plurality of photodetectors arranged in a two-dimensional array and spaced relative to each other to enable incident light to pass between the photodetectors to enter the subject's eye, wherein the plurality of photodetectors is arranged in a plurality of photodetector rows or in a plurality of concentric circles substantially covering the iris and pupil of the subject's eye; and a single wide area photodetector that covers an iris and pupil of the subject's eye. The present invention further relates to a system and method for monitoring an individual's pain level comprising a device as defined above.
