The invention relates to a petroleum characterization method wherein the petroleum is brought into contact with a metal part and includes the following steps: i. modify the water content (w) of petroleum, ii. measuring the corrosion (cr) of said metal part by petroleum whose water content (w) has thus been modified, iii. construct, by repeatedly reiterating the previous two steps (i, ii), a database containing a plurality of different petroleum water content (w) values and a plurality of corrosion (cr) values each corresponding to one of said water content values (w), iv. determining, by processing said database, an optimum value or an optimum range of water content (mw) values of petroleum for which corrosion of the metal part has a minimum value (mcr).
