increased symbol length of upper link pilot time intervals (uppts) in special subframes is described in which a configuration of a first special subframe can be independent of the configuration of a second special subframe in the same frame, so that the first uppts of the first special subframe are longer than the second uppts of the second special subframe. the second uppts of the second special subframe can also be longer than the legacy length uppts in selection settings. a server base station can select special subframe configurations to balance the sound reference signal (srs) capacity for compatible user equipment (ues) and downlink transmission capacity for the old ues. the selected special subframe configurations can be transmitted by the server base stations. in additional aspects, compatible ues can be configured with at least two separate srs power control parameters for use in additional and inherited uppts symbols.
