The present invention relates to a medication control identification system and method comprising a controller, a drug library accessible by the controller, a drug library containing drug library profiles including a drug information data set, and an identification module configured to read patient identification information from machine readable identification devices used by patients and to read drug information from machine readable identification devices affixed to drugs or drug containers. The controller compares the information handled with each other and the drug library profile and provides alerts or error signals in the event of an inconsistency. In one case, the identification devices are used by an optical reader fixedly mounted to the identification module. In another case, the identification devices are read by an optical reader which is portable and mobile and can be moved to the location of the identification device. The portable reader communicates with the identification module via wired or wireless means. In another case, a third non-optical and wireless reader is fixedly mounted to the identification module. The controller is also configured to provide alerts or error messages in the event that there is an inconsistency between drug information in the drug or drug container as compared to the drug library profile associated with the controller.
