ophthalmic lens element, series of ophthalmic lens elements, and method of preparing or designing an ophthalmic lens element. an ophthalmic lens element (200) is disclosed. the ophthalmic lens element (200) includes a central region (102) of low surface astigmatism and a peripheral region (112). central region (102) includes an upper viewing zone (104) to provide a first diopter suitable for remote viewing tasks of the user. the peripheral region (112) has a positive diopter relative to the first diopter, and surrounds the central region (102). peripheral region (112) provides an optical correction for retarding or detecting a myopia of a user and includes one or more relatively higher surface astigmatism regions (110), a lower or near visualization zone (106) of low surface astigmatism and a low surface astigmatism corridor (108) having a surface diopter ranging from that of the upper viewing zone (104) to that of the lower viewing zone (106). the lower viewing zone (106) is for user close viewing tasks.
