Compositions are described having a core and a coating that covers at least a portion of the core, where the core contains a mixture of at least one reagent for oil extraction and at least one polymer of a core matrix. The composition provides a slower release of the reagent for oil extraction into the eluent compared with the release provided by the core. The compositions provide controlled release of the indicator for longer periods of time than is provided by the release from the core. Describes how to prepare compositions and systems containing compositions. Also described are methods for tracking the movement of a fluid in a hydrocarbon formation using compositions and methods for releasing biocides and other well treatment agents in formation fluids over time.
