The present invention relates to a method of producing an adsorbant consisting of a single phase of tetravalent manganese feroxyhite (6-Fe(i.X)MnxOOH) with a negatively charged particle surface, in which a portion of the iron has been isomorphically substituted by manganese atoms at a proportion of 0.05-25%. Its production is performed in a two continuous-flow reactors in series, wherein in the first reactor acidic conditions (pH 5-6) are established and in the second reactor slightly alkaline conditions (pH 9-10) and a high redox potential (600-700 mV) are established. The material can be employed for the retention of mercury, as well as of other heavy metals, both from water and from a warm gaseous stream. In particular, the adsorptive capacity is determined by the size of the negative surface charge and the isoelectric point which can be adjusted by the parameters of the production procedure.
