Ulcerative colitis is a sub-class of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in which chronic, relapsing and debilitating idiopathic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract are involved. Even though immune mechanisms seem to be involved in the pathogenesis and several precipitating factors have been proposed, the cause of the disease is still unknown. It is characterized by inflammation in intestinal and ulcerations within the mucosa of the colon. By understanding the disturbed microbial ecology of the gastrointestinal tract in inflammatory conditions, the aim of this study was to design and deliver a combinational therapeutic treatment to mimic the function of beneficial bacteria for drug delivery. As anticipated, the main focus of the present study was to develop formulation(s) for the site specific delivery of anti-inflammatory agent with coadministration of spirulina blend to the colon using polymeric nano- scaffold as a carrier. It was shown that polymeric nano lipid carriers reveal some advantages for drug therapy over conventional carriers, including increased solubility, the ability to enhance storagest ability, improved permeability and bioavailability, reduced adverse effect, prolonged half-life, and tissue-targeted delivery. The present invention outlines an inflammation targeted delivery of any anti-inflammatory agent with co-administration of spirulina blend to the inflammatory cells in the distal region of the gut. Polymeric lipid nano scaffolds are drug-delivery systems composed of both solid/liquid lipids as a core matrix.
