A process and an apparatus for operating an induction generator for wind energy conversion, comprises a squirrel cage rotor driven by the wind turbine, a stator having a multiphase winding connected to a rectifier for converting the generated AC voltage to a first DC voltage. The first DC voltage is coupled to two DC to DC step-up converters, for stepping up the DC voltage to two higher voltages. One of these feeds a variable frequency multiphase inverter for injecting excitation current into the stator, and the other feeds a grid frequency multiphase inverter for feeding active or reactive power to the grid.
