DEVELOPMENT OF AN INNOVATIVE BAST FIBRE: DOMBEYA (DOMBEYA ACUTANGULA) FIBRES

Now-a-days, the people are interested to use natural products. Rich source of fibre giving plants exist in India. The bast fibres extracted from various plant sources are key drivers for creating the natural products. Therefore, exploration and processing of new fibres are considered as an innovative field. Dombeya {Dombeya acutangula) fibres were extracted through water retting and then scouring, bleaching and softening of extracted fibres were carried to achieve better quality fibres. Afterward, the processed fibres were compared with unprocessed and the results indicated that the processed fibres had better physical and mechanical properties. Then, processed fibres were compared with cotton, flax and jute fibres and gave better results. Hence, Dombeya (Dombeya acutangula) fibres is appropriate for introducing as textile fibres which can increase the sustainability of cellulosic bast fibres at low cost. These fibres may be used as potential natural source in bast fibre based industry like packaging, automobiles and building materials etc.
