A water pumping system comprising an array of solar photovoltaic (SPV) modules for feeding power; a switched reluctance motor (SRM) for driving the system; and a mid-point power converter directly coupled to the SPV modules and switched reluctance motor, wherein the mid-point power converter controlled by means of a control module for enabling maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of said SPV modules and electronic commutation of said switched reluctance motor. The single stage solar photovoltaic array fed switched reluctance motor drive for water pumping, eliminates a DC-DC power conditioning stage. The speed control of motor is achieved through the MPP current output of SPV array. The bulky capacitor at the DC link split capacitor can be reduced with a small capacitor due to adapting a pulse width modulation (PWM) switching of the mid-point converter. Therefore, the system results in a simple, cost-effective and compact water pumping system with high efficiency and reliability.
